My entry to :iconthe9club:'s contest "Scenes from a Sequel"

It had begun with the twins.

Seven and Nine always tried to keep them in check, making sure they hung close when exploring, but today an exciting find had driven then farther away than anticipated. When Nine had looked up, they were gone.

The next few hours were spent in frantic search, canvasing the area they'd been seen last. Seven, though she did her best to hide it, was beside her self with worry. Guilt was settling into 9's mind. He should have kept a closer eye one them. Paid more attention. As he picked his way across the rocky street with Seven, he failed to realize how far ahead he had gotten. It wasn't until he heard his companion call him back that he turned. She was perched on top of a rock pile, helmet down and spear in hand looking fierce. Her stance relaxed when she realized that she had finally captured his attention, "Over here!"

And then, a sound, something Nine was unfamiliar with. A hushing sound, like air pushed through a billows or wind through a sail, repeating over and over. Then behind Seven there rose the head and shoulders of a figure wielding an instrument of some kind. It was covered all over in a slick, sickly green rubber, hoses protruding from it's face below a...

Nine was sure that his sight was betraying him.

It had optics.

"SEVEN!" he cried, running forward and gesturing. She turned back for a split second before diving down the pile, however the thing was too fast for her. The net had come down, collecting her as she tumbled down the slope. The creature lifted the net, shifting so that she was entangled and could not escape. It paused a moment, considering her, turning her this way and that. When she flailed her spear at it, it swiftly moved her to arms length. Then it scanned the area. By this time, Nine had ducked behind a rusted tin, watching as it descended the hill with Seven secure in it's net.

It had taken him the rest of the day to keep up with the creature. The entire time, he speculated what it was, why it wanted Seven. It didn't head in the direction of the factory, instead moving towards a familiar area. A decaying building, standing still against all odds, in the center of town. A place of memories. The home of the scientist.

As the creature approached the building it paused, tilting it's head back to peer up at the abandoned home for a moment before settling in next to a pit of still smoldering coals. Nine felt a shiver of fear run through him. Was that what was going to happen? Was it going to burn her?

But then, gently, it took the netted Seven and pulled over a large metal container. It was something Nine was familiar with. They had once stayed in a building that had many of them lining the walls, each with the bones of small animals in them. Inside, curled in one corner, were the twins. At the sight of them, he bit back a yelp of joy. It was a small miracle that they were still alive.

The large hands of the creature disentangled Seven from the net, when she tried to stab at it again with her spear it quickly caught the tiny weapon, confiscating it. Then, to Nine's surprise, the creature raised one finger, shaking it as though admonishing her, as One had done when he was alive. Afterwards, it dropped her into the cage with the twins who instantly attached themselves to her sides, cowering.

Before Nine's eyes, the creature knelt down, staring at them through the mesh of the cage, watching their movements almost in the same way the twins did. As though it were trying to record each stirring for future reference. Seven glared back at it, hugging the twins to her sides. After several minutes of motionlessness on either party, the figure crept backwards, keeping it's dark glassy optics on them. It settled itself on what remained of the bottom stair and threw some wood on the coals, stirring up a fire.

Once the fire was going strong, it reached down, plucking a leather bound book from a pack near it and opening it with care in it's lap. As it opened the book, it seemed to be searching the pages for something. Then with a sudden jerk, it tilted the book into the light, examining it's find.

All at once, Nine recognized it.

It was a journal. A journal from the first room.

And on the page was a drawing of Seven, like the drawing of himself he had seen in the hands of the man that made them.

Nine wasn't sure what this thing was, human, machine, or possibly a stitchpunk of some kind. But he knew that he needed to find out.

With that thought in mind, he headed towards the cage.
